Breakfast was quick, scrambled eggs with toast and coffee, and then they were off to visit the park’s headquarters. “It should be quiet enough,” Gwen told Angie. Angie was wearing the clothes she had worn last night, jeans and a hoodie, and Gwen had changed into casual jeans and a t-shirt. “My boss is a shifter too, so she gets the need for secrecy.”

“Oh, what kind of shifter is she?” Angie asked, following her in.

Gwen shook her head. “It’s up to her to tell you,” she replied, keeping her voice low. Angie had no way of knowing that it was considered rude to discuss shifter types with humans. “It’s a very personal thing.”

Angie nodded, looking embarrassed. “Ooh, right. Sorry.”

“It’s fine.” She nodded at a few other rangers in the headquarters, then headed for Emily’s office, Angie in tow. “Once this is all over, we can talk more about things like that, like traditions and other unwritten rules.”

“Great! I’d love to know more!”

Gwen wondered how she would being told that they were true mates. Some humans believed in love at first sight, but being true mates was much more than that. It was knowing that no matter what happened, you always had each other to come home to. It was love, passionate and intense, and for the rest of their lives.

She arrived at Emily’s door, which was ajar. Emily usually did that when she was in her office and rangers were allowed to disturb her. Gwen knocked on the door anyway, waiting for Emily to call out.

“Come in!”

Gwen pushed the door open, and Emily looked surprised. “Woods, it’s your day off. What are you doing here? And who’s this?”

“I’m Angie Richardson.” Angie stepped forward to offer her hand, and Emily got off her chair, leaning across the desk to shake it. “I’m, uhm, with Gwen.”

Gwen shut the door behind her. “It’s about the gargoyle situation,” she said. “I went out last night to find those three students with the video camera.”

Emily had sat down again. “So I’m guessing they didn’t get bored when you didn’t make an appearance two nights ago.”

“Unfortunately, no,” Gwen said. “So, I went out wanting to scare them. Instead, I noticed that Brady and Nick were out again. They were howling.”

Emily groaned. “Dammit, those Johnson boys are gonna bring a whole herd of biologists down here if they’re not careful.” She scribbled something down on a post-it. “I’ll call their parents. Again.”

“They were scaring Angie here, and I — I swooped down to grab one of them,” Gwen admitted. “I dropped him off a couple of hundred yards away.”

Emily looked at her, then at Angie. “Did you now?” Her tone was carefully neutral.

“I went back to grab the other wolf, but he bit my wing. He ran off after that,” Gwen continued. “Angie — Angie did not run off. She wanted to help me.”

Emily frowned, looking at Angie. “You wanted to help Gwen? And she was a gargoyle at the time?”

“She was in pain!” Angie insisted. “She chased those wolves off, I wanted to see if there was something I could do.
